NEWS: Details Revealed for How to Train Your Dragon Land at Universal Epic Universe!
Universal Orlando is in the process of building a whole new theme park — Epic Universe! The park is scheduled to open in 2025 and it sounds like it’s going to be remarkable.
We already know what the main lands are going to be and what some of the attractions are, but today, Universal released a TON of new details on one certain land in particular. Let’s take a look!
How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk
Universal released a new video today sharing major details about the land of How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk. We know about the attractions, shows, and more, so let’s break it down.
Theming
How to Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk will actually be the largest land in Epic Universe (besides Celestial Park in the center)!
When you go through the portal and into Isle of Berk, Universal says you will be taking in a sweeping view of the island that’s straight from the movies! The land takes place between the second and third How to Train Your Dragon movies, so it’s kind of like Berk 2.5.
This is the time that’s a golden age of harmony between the Vikings and dragons. And, when you enter the land, you are now a Viking who can take on adventures!
Everything is going to be Viking-sized as well. Modeled after an eighth century Viking village, you will find handmade features including nine-foot-tall doors, benches carved by chainsaw, woven tapestries, and six buildings made from real timber.
There will also be a bunch of fire-breathing dragons found throughout the land (more on that later!). And, you’ll be able to check out iconic locations from the movies like Gobber’s Forge, Hiccup’s House, and the Dragon racing bleachers.
All of the color from the dragons has been infused into the land to make it a magnificent sight to behold. The village is perched above the sea and will welcome you with those Viking and dragon statues that you see in the films. You can then look out over the land and see a lagoon dotted with Viking ships.
Attractions
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders
The first attraction you’ll find in the land is Hiccup’s Wing Gliders! This is a family roller coaster that lets you get a dragon’s eye view using Hiccup’s latest flying contraption, and it looks like it goes all around the land.
Since Hiccup is an inventor, he has developed a way to simulate flying for us, except Toothless isn’t super happy about it…which leads to him launching our gliders before the wings are attached! So, instead of a smooth ride through Berk, you’ll be careening wildly while you skim across the top of the lagoon.
There will be a minimum height requirement of 40 inches and kids under 48 inches have to be accompanied by a Supervising Companion.
Dragon Racer’s Rally
Next, you can check out Dragon Racer’s Rally where you can train to become a dragon-racer! You’ll practice aerobatic maneuvers and high-speed barrel rolls on a Viking-made dragon-riding trainer.
You will be flying with others and you’ll be able to spin upside down as many times as you want, or not at all! So, the ride can be as wild or as mild as you want it to be.
The ride is themed after the worst dragon racer in the series, Snotlout, and the best dragon racer, Astrid. The attraction actually features a ride system that’s new to Universal and there will be a minimum height requirement of 48 inches.
Fyre Drill
There’s also a ride that you might want to bring a rain poncho for — Fyre Drill! Since it’s important to know how to put out dragon fyres, Ruffnut & Tuffnut have transformed Berk’s Fyre Skööl into a watery boat battle!
On this ride, the two sides of your boat will be competing against each other trying to hit a series of mechanical targets with water cannons that shoot over 28 feet through the air! There will be over 130 moving targets throughout the attraction.
Guests can see the attraction from a bunch of different viewing points since it’s located in the middle of the land within the lagoon. But heads up, Universal is warning that you will likely get soaked!
There is no minimum height requirement but children under 48 inches must be accompanied by a Supervising Companion and hand-held infants are not permitted.
Viking Training Camp
For the little ones, you can head on over to the Viking Training Camp. This is a huge interactive adventure play camp where kids can discover different types of dragons as they explore.
It’s dedicated to teaching little Vikings about all the classes of dragons while the climb and slide through the play area. And, it’s hosted by Fishlegs, Isle of Berk’s resident dragon expert!
Entertainment
The Untrainable Dragon
The major music-filled live show coming to the land is called The Untrainable Dragon. In the show, you’ll see how the arrival of a new dragon in Berk presents a challenge to Hiccup, Gobber, and Astrid and they’ll be working together to solve the mystery of The Untrainable Dragon.
This is a broadway level production with some incredible costuming, sets, and advanced technology to bring those dragons to life. It’s similar to the show at Universal Beijing Resort, but the one in Epic Universe will be set in a different time period and feature varied characters.
The show will also feature Toothless flying directly overhead the audience, weighing in at 1,157 pounds, with a wingspan of nearly 27 feet!
The Dragons of the Land
Hiccup and Toothless
Yep, you will actually get to meet Toothless in person, and we’re SO excited! They’ll be located at the Haddock Paddock, where a tranquil clearing has been created to honor the bond between dragon and Viking.
As you come face to face with Toothless, Universal says they expect many to have a meaningful experience, even getting to recreate the iconic moment from the movies where Hiccup puts his hand out to Toothless.
Other Meet & Greets
Astrid and her Deadly Nadder, Stormfly, as well as Ruffnut and Tuffnut will be seen roaming throughout the world and interacting with guests. And Gobber and his Hotburple dragon Grump will take center stage in the Forge.
So, you get to meet some of your favorite Vikings AND their dragons throughout the Isle of Berk!
Other Dragon Interactions
The dragons are alive in this land! You can also expect to see them flying over the village, shooting out flames, and moving throughout the land. And, they won’t just be in the distance — they’ll be right in front of you!
The Viking village features 30 animated and static dragons, which will represent 17 unique dragon species throughout the world.
Food
Mead Hall
We don’t know a ton about the actual food items yet, but we do know where you can enjoy them! Mead Hall is a fast casual restaurant where you can feast on a hearty menu of meats and fish and enjoy some drinks made just for the land, like a variety of meads, ciders, and ales.
This is the beating heart of Berk and the hall is a larger-than-life space that’s the village’s main gathering place. There is a grand chamber made from mountain rock, with a giant chandelier hanging overhead.
Shopping
We’re still waiting on more details about the shopping locations in this land, but Universal did share some concept art! This colorful space below looks like it will likely have some fun sweet treats.
And, this other spot looks like where you can pick up some souvenirs themed to the land.
