‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ Star Maggie Smith Dies at 89
Legendary British actress Dame Maggie Smith passed away on Friday in London at the age of 89.
Known for her unforgettable roles in Downton Abbey and the Harry Potter series, Smith’s career, spanned over six decades, and left a memorable mark on stage, television, and film.

Her sons shared the sad news earlier today:
It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith. She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.

She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.
Illustrious Career
Smith’s portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films endeared her to a new generation of fans, but the entertainment industry had long recognized her talent. Smith has two Oscars, three Emmys, and a long list of stage accolades to her name.
She is regarded as one of the finest actors of her time.
