News Conference Raises Questions After Epic Universe Ride Fatality
The family of 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala held a news conference this afternoon with civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
In addition to sharing details about Zavala and his love for coasters, Crump shared, “We have to know what happened.”

A theme park enthusiast, Rodriguez Zavala was described by his family as “one of a kind,” independent despite a spinal cord injury, and someone who lived life with joy and determination.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump stressed at the news conference that “we have to know what happened” to Rodriguez Zavala.

Rodriguez Zavala was found unresponsive after riding the coaster in Epic Universe and later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Universal Orlando officials.
The medical examiner ruled the death accidental, citing multiple blunt impact injuries.

Crump noted, “No medical emergency, he was just fine,” referring to the night Rodriguez Zavala boarded the ride.
He added that Rodriguez Zavala drove, held a bachelor’s degree, and lived independently.

Family members remembered Rodriguez Zavala with love and admiration. His mother playfully called him a “roller coaster freak” in Spanish and his sister described him as an “old soul.”

His brother shared that the two had plans to play video games the night of his death.
The family shared in a written statement:
As a son, he brought warmth and pride to our parents’ hearts. As a brother and uncle, he was a source of laughter, guidance, and unconditional love. As a friend, he was loyal, thoughtful, and always present.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at San Juan Funeral Home in Kissimmee, and the community is invited to attend. To help cover expenses, a GoFundMe has been set up.
