Could Theme Park Reservations Be Coming to Universal?
If you’ve been to Disney World post-COVID, you’ll know that Disney is now monitoring attendance with a theme park reservation system. Under the system, guests must have a valid ticket as well as a reservation to visit a specific theme park on a specific day. Without a reservation, guests are not guaranteed admission regardless of whether or not they have a ticket. Though Universal Orlando has, to date, avoided adopting a similar strategy, could a Universal Theme Park Reservation System be on the horizon?
According to a recent piece in The Street, Universal could be looking to adopt an attendance-tracking reservation system for its theme parks as well. As the piece explains, when Universal gets close to reaching capacity at its Orlando theme parks it uses a “one-in-one-out” strategy. However, with the construction of its EPIC Universe theme park, we can expect the Universal parks to be more popular than ever meaning that its current admission system may need a re-think.
According to the piece in The Street, Universal has begun surveying guests about adopting a new Disney theme park reservation system. In an online survey, Universal asks visitors about their thoughts regarding the theme park reservation system that has been in place at Disney since 2020. Due to the specificity of the survey, it’s leading insiders to conclude that Universal is thinking of ways of regulating entrance to the parks that would allow them to keep a better handle on attendance.
Historically the big draw at Universal Orlando has been the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Universal, has in the past, needed to limit attendance to Wizarding World due to large crowds. We suspect that Universal will be faced with similar crowd-control issues in the future especially when EPIC Universe opens in 2025 and with it Super Nintendo World.
Limiting attendance would be a logical way to keep lines and crowds at manageable levels. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait to see what Universal’s big takeaways are from the guest surveys and what impact they will have on theme park attendance. In the short term, it seems like Universal parkgoers will still be able to visit sans a park reservation. However, this may change in the future.
Disney on the other hand, looks like it will be hanging on to its controversial theme park reservation system for the foreseeable future. You can find out more about this and other Disney-related news on our sister site www.mickeyblog.com.
